Late-season heat in WA

Ben Domensino, 29 May 2019

Unseasonably warm air is affecting Western Australia's Gascoyne coast this week.

A large high pressure system to the south of Western Australia is directing a warm air mass across the Gascoyne District. This is the same high that's sent a procession of cold fronts across southeastern Australia during the last few days.

Carnarvon's 34.9 degrees at 1:30pm on Wednesday made this their warmest day this late in the season in more than 100 years of records. It's the second day Carnarvon achieved this feat, following Tuesday's top of 33.7 degrees.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the low thirties on Thursday and Friday, before cooling by a few more degrees over the weekend.

Carnarvon's average maximum temperature during May is 26 degrees.
