  • What will the weather be like to enjoy your Democracy Sausage

    Craig Mitchell, 3 May 2025

The polls are open across the nation today, and among those queuing to vote will be the volunteers manning the BBQs and serving up the traditional "Democracy Sausage."

So, what will the weather be like whilst polling booths are open, and the sizzle of sausages can be heard on the BBQ?

Many locations along the coastal and adjacent inland regions from Taree on the Mid North Coast of NSW to Thursday Island at the northern tip of Queensland's Cape York Peninsula are likely to experience a few showers at times during the day. Gusty onshore winds will bring cooler temperatures along the coastal areas.

Cooler temperatures are also expected inland across eastern Queensland under cloudy skies and patchy rain. The Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts are looking at temperatures reaching between 23 to 27 degrees, or in other words, 5 to 9 degrees below the May average. Therefore, finding somewhere to shelter while biting into your hot sausage may provide some comfort from the cooler temperatures.

The other region where some showers may dampen the sausage-eating experience is the southwest of Western Australia. The passage of a cold front brings some showers and gusty northwest to southwest winds for locations southwest of Geraldton to Southern Cross to Norseman. Cooler conditions will follow the passage of the cold front as afternoon temperatures struggle to reach the mid to high teens across the South West, South Coastal, South East Coastal, and Great Southern districts. Once again, get hold of a hot sausage to offset the cooler temperatures!

Over the northern regions of the country, temperatures are forecast to be near average, with centre's over the Northern Territory's Barkly and western Top End regions expected to exceed 30 degrees. Similarly, the typical warmer weather extends into north and northwest Western Australia, with daytime temperatures expected to range between 30 to 35 degrees. Therefore, along with your Democracy Sausage, I would recommend a nice cold bottle of water or soft drink.

A strong ridge of high pressure will bring rather pleasant temperatures and dry conditions for the remainder of the country, with some high cloud across the south and into the southeast. Perfect conditions for munching on a sausage, or two, and enjoying the outdoor experience!
