Cold and dry August in Adelaide

Graeme Brittain, 1 September 2019

Temperatures and rainfall were below the long-term August average for South Australia's capital city.

Adelaide's West Terrace site only received around 68% (42mm) of the long term average for the month (62mm), while the Kent Town site recorded just over 50mm, which is 74% of the monthly average (68mm).

Almost all of the month's rain fell on Thursday 8th/Friday 9th and Monday 19th, in association with a pair of cold fronts followed by showery southwesterly winds.

August 2019's mean temperature was 1.0 degrees below average at Kent Town and 0.5 degrees below average at West Terrace.

Cooler than average sea surface temperatures over Gulf St Vincent were partly to blame for August's below average temperatures.
