  • Brisbane skies dazzle in wake of thriller grand final

    Quincy Tut, 28 September 2025

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the atmosphere flew a celebratory banner across Brisbane as overnight celebrations were continuing following a dominant AFL victory by the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night.

The Lions sealed their second premiership title in a row, after defeating the Geelong Cats by 47 points. High-level jetstream cloud streamed over the city as the sun rose on Sunday.

As the sun rose around half past five in the morning, the distant line of the leading edge of the high-level cloud could be seen approaching from the southwest. Within about an hour, the straight edge of the cloud was over the Brisbane area.

As the celebrations for Brisbanites continue throughout Sunday, the cloud should largely clear into the afternoon, with a top of 30 bringing a sunny spring day made for basking in glory.

This spectacular cloud follows periods of smoke observed over southeast Queensland late last week, as hazard reduction burns were taking place.
